Joan Manuel Lopez Ruiz
Hi! I’m Joan Manuel Lopez Ruiz, data scientist and analyst. Do you know what do I like the most about my profession? Converting complex data into captivating stories, so that it could help to better understand the results I get in my analysis.
In my work day I address the key challenges of any activity or business line, answering the questions arisen. I identify and gather essential data, I preprocess them conveniently and I apply precisely data mining and machine learning techniques to obtain meaningful results.
Finally I offer a unique and creative point of view in the presentation of every project, combining impressive visualizations with simple narratives, always adapting to every single situation and target audience. I also can create interactive documents with tools such as Tableau, PowerBI or ArcGIS Online, so that each user can explore these results as they wish.

Interests
Data-driven city. I’m specially curious to explore how to facilitate the management of a city analysing the data generated there. Cities are complex ecosystems composed of many interrelated dimensions. The optimal operation of any urban space, regardless its size, depends on the precise knowledge of each one of its dimensions and its effects on the others.
Storytelling. The big dilemma of every data analyst, how to synthesize hours and hours of work in roughly five or ten minutes, transmitting the obtained results in an understanding way. Firstly, through clear and simple visualizations, using plots easy to understand at first sight. Secondly, through the development of a storyline that puts together all the steps of the analysis, from the formulation of the question to be solved to the final conclusions. I’m convinced that an effective communication is the key factor for the success of any data project.

Publications
I usually practice my data science skills by doing projects, in R or Python languages as well as some Tableau dashboards, based on datasets from open data portals. You can check the technical projects in the library of projects section, and the derived articles and video presentations in the publications section, both of them in the Spanish version of the Magenta Data Portfolio. Right now all these works are only available in Spanish, however I am considering the idea of translating the most interesting ones to English and publish them on this site.
